TVNZ has been accused of using the police hunt for Aisling Symes to promote its psychic-based entertainment show Sensing Murder.

The state broadcaster has received hundreds of emails since TV One reporter Amy Kelly asked police if they would investigate a tip from medium Deb Webber.

Webber said she had information on the case during an interview with Paul Henry on Breakfast on Wednesday.

"I was walking past the television and [Aisling] popped up, and I went 'oh, she's in a ditch, hole, in West Auckland," Webber told Henry. "That's what I got, instantly."

At a police press conference later that day, TV One news reporter Amy Kelly asked if they would follow up Webber's lead.

Former policeman Dan Thompson of Paragon Investigations said he was appalled that the broadcaster appeared to be using a criminal investigation to promote the stars of an entertainment programme. "I'm totally aghast - it seems like a totally commercial play," he said.

TVNZ spokeswoman Andi Brotherston denied the claim: "We're not trying to push a psychic message to make money and get ratings."

Brotherston was not aware of any formal complaints about Webber's comments but said the broadcaster had received hundreds of informal emails.

Webber said the story had been "blown out of proportion".

"It hurts because I am interested in finding a little girl, not me. Every time I say something it seems to be twisted around to not the truth."

Webber said she had been contacted by the Symes family after appearing on Breakfast but didn't know whether Aisling was alive.

Investigation head Inspector Gary Davey said all information given to the inquiry team was assessed and prioritised.

While Webber's comments were not being written off, her vision was vague and of little use at present.

"If she's said there's a body in a ditch in West Auckland, there are plenty of ditches and we can't do much with that information.

"With psychics, if they have information we feel we can check out, then we will."

Thompson said police were obliged to follow all information offered, and feared Webber's claim could divert resources from more realistic leads.

"This isn't 600,000 people sitting at home watching an entertainment show ... this is a little girl missing - let's get serious about it."

Police in New Zealand investigating the disappearance of two-year-old girl Aisling Symes have found the body of "a young child" in a drain

Aisling went missing from outside a house in Auckland a week ago, and detectives believed she had been abducted.

The case brought comparisons with that of Madeleine McCann, the British girl who vanished in Portugal over two years ago.

NZ 'Madeleine' baffles police From their home in Leicestershire, Madeleine's parents Gerry and Kate McCann sent a message of support to Aisling's parents.

Inspector Gary Davey, heading the investigation, said it was "with tremendous sorrow" that he had to announce the discovery of the body on a property very close to where Aisling was last seen.

He said it was too early to say how the child had got into the drain or how long the body had been there.

"The immediate scene has been cordoned off and treated as a crime scene," he said. "I know you've got a lot of questions and so do I."

He made no mention of any arrest or whether police were questioning anyone.

The blonde-haired, blue-eyed toddler was with her mother Angela and sister Caitlin, 5, when she disappeared on Oct 5.

Her father Alan, from County Waterford in Ireland, spoke at the weekend of the family's agony in waiting for news of her and police issued a plea for Aisling's suspected abductor to leave her in a safe place.

The story has gripped New Zealand, where child abductions are extremely rare.

Homeowner says council warned about manhole

How well do you think the police handled the Aisling Symes case?

A homeowner says she complained to the council two weeks ago about the lid coming off the manhole above the drain where Aisling Symes was found.

Waitakere City Council has confirmed a complaint was received 24 days before Aisling went missing.

Police last night found the two-year-old's body in the stormwater drain at 5 Longburn Rd, about 20m from the home of Aisling's deceased grandparents at No 7, from which she went missing last Monday.

Council spokesman Wally Thomas said six days after a complaint was received on September 10, council contractors found large willow tree roots in the drain and began "the process of deciding how best to go about removing them".

Asked if that decision was made before Aisling went missing, Mr Thomas said: "No, sadly, not."

Longburn Road landlady Stacey Baker said she made the most recent complaint to the Waitakere City Council a week before Aisling disappeared, after heavy rain moved the 20kg lid of the stormwater drain which was found ajar on the day Aisling went missing.

Her current tenants used to live next door to number 5 Longburn Road and moved across the road into Ms Baker's house because of the flooding the drain creates, she said.

"The council actually told me that the lid blows off number five," Ms Baker said.

She said she had complained about the problem for years. Her tenant Sonya Carrington told nzherald.co.nz that the main reason she moved across the street was "because I didn't want my kids down that drain".

Ms Carrington said the discovery of Aisling's body in the drain after the history of complaints was disturbing.

"It's disgusting - that's what makes me sick."

Police and later Aisling's father searched the drain on the day she went missing but her body was not found until about 8 o'clock last night.

Mr Davey said the drain was also searched by Water Care Services who are in charge of storm water. However, the cameras could only go 9m into the drain and found nothing.

He said police and fire fighters began five hours of digging up the drain yesterday because he was "not happy with that part of the search".

At a media conference this morning, Mr Davey said there had been a history of the drain blocking.

He said it was raining at the time Aisling went missing and that it would not have been possible for her to turn around inside the drain.

"Whether it was washing her down or she was crawling down, we just don't know," Mr Davey said.

He said the drain cover had been up to 12cm ajar when a police officer came across it on the day she went missing. Mr Davey said the officer searched part of the drain that he could get into with a torch and called out to Aisling but could only hear running water.
