HOUSTON -- The FBI is investigating whether hundreds of Houstonians were given fake flu shots, KPRC Local 2 reported in an exclusive story Thursday.Investigators said the free flu shots were given at an ExxonMobil health fair on Oct. 19 and 20 at the Baytown refinery. About 1,100 people received them before the vaccine ran out.

A few days later, the company got a disturbing call from the FBI."We were informed late Monday by the FBI that there was some possibility that the flu vaccinations were not flu vaccinations," said Chris Erickson, refinery manager.

The company put out an e-mail advising employees who received the shots be tested for possible infections."There've been no complaints from any of our folks on adverse reactions and one of the things that I'm really concerned about is the health and well-being of all the employees and contractors -- anyone who got the shot," Erickson said.

In the past, ExxonMobil has bought vaccine directly and used its own personnel to administer the shots.For the first time this year, the company hired an outside contractor. Sources told KPRC Local 2 that the contractor is America Home Health Supply. The company's address was a vacant office in Baytown. The landlord said the company is in the process of moving in.

KPRC wanted to know if the same vaccine was given to employees at other companies.Along with the FBI, the Food and Drug Administration and the Harris County Health Department are also investigating. But no one is talking.

The U.S. Attorney's Office issued a written statement Thursday afternoon.It said, in part, "We are also attempting to ascertain whether others might have received a fake vaccine. We do not believe the substance injected was harmful, but we are conducting additional tests."

ExxonMobil said samples of the vaccine in question and the syringes used to give it have been sent to the FDA lab in Washington for analysis.KPRC tried repeatedly to contact America Home Health Supply, but was unsuccessful.

Influenza is one of the most serious diseases to affect the United States, according to doctors.Approximately 36,000 people die from it annually.
