Tonight's full Moon will be almost 12 percent bigger than some of the full Moons this year, according to NASA, setting up a fine viewing opportunity when it rises in the evening.The reason: The Moon is near perigee, the point on its slightly out-of-round orbit that is closest to Earth.
This Moon is called the Harvest Moon, owing to its timing of being nearest the autumnal equinox.

Farmers in the past relied on it to harvest all night. The Harvest Moon is not always closer and bigger than normal.
The Moon will rise around 6 p.m. local time. It will be officially "full" at 11:13 p.m. EDT, though the Moon is never really full.

Some other strange Moon facts:
— The Moon is not bigger when on the horizon.
— The Moon is moving away as you read this. Far away.
— There is no proof the Moon makes people crazy.
Late Monday night and into Tuesday morning, Oct. 10, the Moon will pass in front of the Pleiades star cluster, creating an interesting skywatching opportunity for skywatchers with telescopes.

I TRIED TO SAVE RIVER HORSE GIRL

A HOTEL owner told yesterday of his frantic effort to save a British woman who drowned crossing a river on horseback.
Claire Jackson, 36, was on a riding holiday in South Africa when she was swept into the sea by a freak wave.
Conrad Winterbach tried to reach her by boat but had to turn back.
The two women who had been riding with Claire shouted that they had seen her in the surf.
Mr Winterbach said: "I climbed over the rocks and swam to where they said. But it was getting dark and was hard to see."
Claire, from London, was finally washed up on the shore.
Mr Winterbach said: "We did CPR and worked on her for about an hour. We tried our hardest."
He added that the Nxaxo River next to the Wavecrest Hotel where Claire was staying on the Transkei Wild Coast was unusually swollen.
Claire's husband has flown out to South Africa. Police said the horse she was riding survived.
