This is a cheap way to produce power for people living in mountainous regions on the world. Could especially help poor villages along the Himalayas Mountains.  All that's needed is a very long PVC pipe, a wind turbine (drawn above) and a generator.  The pipe starts at the base of the mountain...lets say at 1,000 feet...and then is run up the side of the mountain until the altitude reaches say 9,000 feet.   The difference in pressure at both ends causes airflow in the pipe...this air flow turns the turbine, which turn the generator and produces electricity. (I have had a similar, more details dream like this before)

Regarding airflow through a pipe with a 9,000-foot differential in
altitude:  There would be no effective difference in air pressure,
since the air column inside the pipe would have the same pressure
gradient as the air outside.

On the other hand, if you made a loop with one side insulated so that
air cooled at altitude descended down the other side, you could get
air flow, but the velocity would be so low--in part due to friction
from the walls of the pipe--that you wouldn't get much energy out of
it.

It would be better just to stick a windmill on the mountain. :)

Hi, thanks for this, and not just saying it will not work, but how to fix it.  Do you think there is any other way to make this work other than you suggestion?Brian

Brian, you've made me think, which many folks would say I do too much
of already... What we're really looking for is cheap energy using a
"pipe" up a hill...

Let's make it metal ducting, such as you might find in a commercial
ventilation system. Say, three feet across by two feet deep, and
perhaps 50 to 100 feet long. Set it at an angle so it always gets good
sunlight: Aim it at the North Star so it's always perpendicular to the
sun (essentially point it North, angled to match your latitude). Paint
it black, and leave both ends (top and bottom) open, for the moment.

Now, when the sun heats the metal, the air inside will get hot, and
begin to rise. It will rise slowly, but the ENTIRE MASS of air inside
the duct will be moving. Keep that in mind.

When the air is hot, we should get about a pound of lift (pressure
differential) for each 10 foot length of ducting (rough estimate!), so
a 50 foot section should give about 5 pounds of lift. I'm at a loss as
to how fast the air would move at the moment--I'm supposed to be doing
something else right now--but your results will vary depending on the
air volume and speed your generator turbine requires. You'd need a
turbine that can run at a 5psi differential (at our atmospheric
pressure), with whatever volume we get from the system.

Remember that if the air moves too fast, it won't get as hot.

Now, here's a tricky part. Remember the ENTIRE MASS that we have in
motion? Well, suppose 5psi isn't enough to turn our turbine. Get the
air flowing with an open bottom, then SLAM IT SHUT, leaving only the
turbine (mounted at the BOTTOM of the duct) to let air in. That air
mass is going to pop ears at the bottom of the shaft, which could spin
the turbine for a second. When the air stops, let the bottom open to
get air flowing again. Not sure what this would do to your
electronics, but it should be useable to charge batteries. :) This
"flapper" could be actuated by the air flow into the duct. Hopefully,
you wouldn't need it.

I don't think this system would work well with windmill blades; they'd
let too much air past them to maintain the pressure differential.
