Hi Brian,Could this be linked?Regards.Anne.Norwegian Cruise Ship Runs Aground in Antarctica By REUTERSPublished: January 31, 2007Filed at 5:26 a.m. ET OSLO (Reuters) - A cruise vessel owned by Norwegian Hurtigruten Group with 370 people on board briefly ran aground near Deception Island in Antarctica on Tuesday, the company said.
Hurtigruten said in a statement on Wednesday that the MS Nordkapp quickly refloated herself after the incident, during which none of the 294 passengers or 76 crew was injured.
``No spillage from the ship has been discovered,'' it said, but added it had laid out oil spill protection equipment as safety routines demand.
The MS Nordkapp has people from 19 nationalities on board, including 117 U.S. citizens.
Hurtigruten said it was too early to estimate the direct economic consequence of the incident but the company assumed the MS Nordkapp's last three sailings planned for this season in Antarctica would be canceled.
The 123-metre-long vessel, built in 1996, is now anchored at Whalers Bay just off Deception Island and will now continue toward Ushuaia in Argentina in the company of another ship, Hurtigruten said.
It said sister vessel MS Nordnorge would arrive before noon on Wednesday, January 31, to transport all passengers to Argentina.
``The situation is under control and the passengers fully informed of the situation,'' it said.

Cruise ship in trouble at Deception Island
The Nordkapp ... hit rock bottom.

A cruise ship carrying Australian passengers has run aground off an island near Antarctica.
The MS Nordkapp was carrying 76 crew and 295 passengers - 12 of them Australian - when it ran aground just off Deception Island about 2.30pm on Tuesday (4.30am Wednesday, Sydney time).
Deception Island is part of the South Shetland Islands, which are about 120 kilometres from the Antarctic peninsula.
No one was injured and the ship was able to free itself under its own steam, said Australian sales agency MyPlanet on behalf of the company that operates the vessel, the Hurtigruten Group.
"There is no danger to passengers, crew, the environment or the vessel. The Hurtigruten spokesperson Mr Sten Lillebo has confirmed that he has been in contact with the people on board and that everything is calm onboard," MyPlanet said in a statement.
The MS Nordkapp is anchored in the sheltered harbour of Whalers Bay on Deception Island and efforts are being made to transfer passengers onto a sister ship, the MS Nordnorge, which has 30 more Australian passengers onboard.
"The weather conditions in the area are good and the situation is under control. All passengers will be transported back to Ushuaia in southern Argentina with the help of MS Nordnorge, which is also part of the Hurtigruten fleet, and other vessels in the vicinity," MyPlanet said.
The MS Nordnorge is expected to reach the MS Nordkapp by 5pm Sydney time, MyPlanet said.
"The families of the Australian passengers have all been contacted this morning by MyPlanet or travel agents.
"MyPlanet is currently doing everything possible to help passengers and next-of-kin, and to assist the relevant authorities as much as possible.
"At present, MyPlanet has no further information about practical issues, but is currently working on finding out as much as possible in order to provide further advice and assistance during the day."

119 Americans Stranded After Cruise Ship Runs Aground off Antarctic Island
Wednesday, January 31, 2007
OSLO, Norway — A Norwegian cruise ship with nearly 300 passengers on board ran aground in the Antarctic and damaged its hull before getting free of rocks, a ferry company said. No one was injured.
The 294 passengers were being evacuated Wednesday from the M/S Nordkapp to a sister ship as a precaution, though a spokeswoman for the group, Hanne K. Kristiansen, said there was no danger to the passengers or the vessel that ran aground.
"This is not a critical situation," she said.
The vessel ran aground Tuesday near Deception Island, which is part of the Antarctic archipelago South Shetland Island.
By Wednesday, the ship had dislodged itself from the rocks and was anchored in Walker Bay waiting for the sister vessel, the Nordnorge, to take the passengers, Kristiansen said by telephone.
The passengers were from 19 countries. The largest group among them — 119 people — was from the United States, she said.
Both cruise ships are operated by a company called Norwegian Coastal Voyage.

Updated:2007-01-31 07:51:48Norwegian Cruise Stranded in AntarcticBy DOUG MELLGRENAPOSLO, Norway (AP) - Nearly 300 passengers, including 113 Americans, were awaiting rescue Wednesday from a Norwegian cruise ship that ran aground off a remote Antarctic island, damaging its hull.
The M/S Nordkapp got off the rocks under her own steam and sought shelter in a nearby harbor, where it was awaiting the arrival later Wednesday of another Norwegian Coastal Voyage ship, the M/S Nordnorge, the cruise operator said in a statement.
The company said no one was hurt in Tuesday's mishap in the Southern Ocean and the Nordkapp was not in danger.
"The ship is now at anchor in Walker Bay, and is being met by M/S Nordnorge," said Hanne K. Kristiansen, a spokeswoman for Norwegian Coastal Voyage.
The 294 passengers were to be transferred to the sister ship using tenders from the two ships, small boats usually reserved for excursions. The Nordnorge would then take the passengers on to Argentina.
The 404-foot Nordkapp, built in 1996, and the virtually identical Nordnorge cruise the Antarctic during the southern hemisphere summer. They sail off the coast of Norway during the European summer.
The company said the ship was on its way back to Argentina when it ran aground near Deception Island, which is part of the South Shetland archipelago.
The statement said a British warship was also meeting the Nordkapp, and would send down divers to inspect the damage to its hull and then escort the ship to port in Argentina.
Kristiansen said the Nordkapp was not taking in water, but that the passengers were being taken off as a precaution.
As soon as the tourists are aboard the Nordnorge, it will depart for Ushuaia, Argentina, a roughly 40-hour trip.

By DOUG MELLGREN, Associated Press Writer Thu Feb 1, 10:35 AM ETOSLO, Norway - Passengers were evacuated from the M/S Nordknapp after it ran aground on a remote Antarctic island.
The 294 passengers were evacuated to sister ship M/S Nordnorge as a precaution, said Hanne K. Kristiansen, a spokeswoman for Norwegian Coastal Voyage. The British navy ship HMS Endurance stood by to assist.
"The transfer of all of the passengers and eight of the crew was successfully completed," she said. "No one was harmed."
The Norwegian cruise ship, whose passengers included 119 Americans, damaged its hull before getting free of rocks, officials said Wednesday. No one was injured.
The vessel ran aground Tuesday near Deception Island, which is part of the Antarctic archipelago South Shetland Island.
The ship pulled off the rocks under its own power and anchored in the sheltered waters of Walker Bay for the passenger transfer, Kristiansen said by telephone.
After the transfer, the ship carrying the passengers headed for Ushuaia, Argentina, a roughly 40-hour trip, she said.
"We are having a fine time. In fact, it is very nice," Norwegian passenger Terje Johansen told The Associated Press from the Nordkapp earlier in the day.
He said passengers initially were nervous when the ship ran aground, but quickly understood that there was no danger.
"There is a little bit of waves, so they are waiting with the transfer. Right now, I'm in my cabin trying to get a little sleep," he said by ship's telephone.

January 31, 2007 03:28pmArticle from: AAP
A CRUISE ship with almost 300 passengers on board, including 12 Australians, has run aground off a remote Antarctic island.
The 125m MS Nordkapp ran aground off Deception Island, part of the South Shetland Islands, about 5.30am (AEDT) today.
Tour operator My Planet said there were no injuries and the vessel made it into a sheltered harbour nearby.
Efforts were now on rescuing those on board, and a sister ship was expected to reach the remote island group, about 120km north of the Antarctic Peninsula, later today.
"There is no danger to passengers, crew, the environment or the vessel," My Planet managing director Greg Arnott said.
"MS Nordkapp has under her own steam been able to come off the ground and is now safely anchored in ... Whalers Bay on Deception Island.
"The weather conditions in the area are good and the situation is under control."
Mr Arnott also said a representative of the Hurtigruten Group, which owns the vessel, had been in contact with the vessel and "everything is calm on board".
The vessel is carrying 295 passengers and a crew of 76.
"All passengers will be transported back to Ushuaia in southern Argentina with the help of (sister ship) MS Nordnorge, which is also part of the Hurtigruten fleet, and other vessels in the vicinity," Mr Arnott said.
Mr Arnott said the families of all of the Australian passengers had been contacted and the MS Nordnorge was expected to reach the stricken vessel about 6pm (AEDT).
The MS Nordkapp, built in 1997, tours Antarctica during the southern hemisphere summer.
It sails off the coast of Norway during the European summer and is suitable for light ice conditions.

Antarctic cruise liner hits iceberg, 150 rescued
21 hours ago
SANTIAGO (AFP) — A cruise ship slammed into an iceberg and sank off Antarctica Friday, forcing 154 passengers and crew to take to lifeboats before they were rescued unharmed by another vessel and taken to nearby military bases.
"There was wind, and it was very cold, and we were wet because of the waves," crew member Andrea Salas, 38, told Argentina's radio Continental.
She said the passengers and crew spent three to four hours on lifeboats before they were rescued by a Norwegian cruise ship Nordnorge.
"They are in good condition. There is no hypothermia, they all have food and clothes. Everything is OK," Nordnorge captain Arnvid Hansen told AFP by phone after the Titanic-style accident on the icy seas near the South Shetland islands.
An attempt later to ferry the cruise passengers in small boats from the Nordnorge to King George Island, in South Shetland, had to be called off because of strong winds.
Chilean Navy and Air Force personnel then ferried 84 people to Chile's Frei military base, and the remaining 70 to Uruguay's Artigas military bases, both in Antartica, for an overnight stay, a Frei spokesman told reporters.
The Canadian GAP Adventures company that ran the ill-fated cruise said it was making arrangements to fly the 91 passengers, among them Australians, Britons, Canadians and Americans, to their respective homes.
"Their families have been contacted and they have been able to contact their families. They're all in good spirits," GAP Adventures spokeswoman Marie-Anne MacRae told AFP.
"We're going to work out arrangements for flying them back home ... most likely from Buenos Aires," she added.
The captain of the Explorer and another senior officer stayed on board the 2,400-tonne Liberian-registered Explorer until it became clear it would sink.
A Chilean icebreaker in the area said the Explorer sank at 1830 GMT in the Drake Passage, between Antarctica and the southern tip of South America, adding that it was cleaning up a 180-meter (yard) long oil slick left by the ship.
"I was in the bar after midnight, having a drink with my colleagues and some passengers, when I saw people come up from the lower cabins, wet and shouting: 'there's water,'" said Salas.
"The ship encountered ice and the result was a hole about the size of a fist, and a crack through which water began leaking in," said Susan Hayes, GAP's vice president of marketing.
She said the night-time evacuation onto lifeboats went smoothly. "They actually had several hours while the pumps were pumping the water from the bilge."
"All passengers onboard received evacuation training the first day they arrived on the ship," the company said in a statement.
"This training was put into place as passengers were assembled in the lecture hall and informed of the situation. With everyone well-dressed and prepared, the passengers of the M/S Explorer were safely taken off the ship in lifeboats."
The National Geographic Endeavor ship also helped in the rescue effort, officials said.
The collision occurred shortly after midnight near the island of San Carlos, according to the Chilean navy.
The Lloyds List maritime publication said the Explorer had five "deficiencies" at its last inspection including problems with a watertight door.
The ship, which was built in 1969, also had lifeboat maintenance problems and missing search and rescue plans, according to a report on Lloyds' website.
Watertight doors were described as "not as required," and the fire safety measures were also criticized, it said, citing an inspection done by Britain's Maritime and Coastguard Agency in May this year.
Chilean port inspectors also found six deficiencies during an inspection in Puerto Natales in March, including two related to navigation matters, it said.
The passengers were from Australia (10), Belgium (two), Britain (23), Canada (10), China (one), Denmark (three), Holland (17), France (one), Germany (one), Hong Kong (two), Ireland (three), Japan (one), Switzerland (four) and the United States (13).
Cruise ships regularly take passengers to the remote region to view icebergs and other Antarctic natural features at this time of year, when weather is relatively good, with the Antarctic heading from late spring into summer. The average temperature is about minus five degrees Celsius (23 Fahrenheit.)
