Tsunami warning a sign of things to come

WOLLONGONG: Monday's tsunami warning on the east coast of Australia provided a glimpse of what would eventually but assuredly come, according to tsunami expert Professor Ted Bryant from Wollongong University.

He said it was inevitable a major tsunami would eventually hit Australia's East Coast, which he predicted would create havoc given the continuing trend of people wanting to live by the beach.

"One day, at a beach near you, a tsunami will come and it won't be so popular any more," Professor Bryant said.

Current Australian trends of people moving to be near the beach defied Australia's history which featured people heading to the hills to be safe from the sea's unpredictable nature.

"If you look at all the historic homestead and properties that are still around, you'll see they're all in the hills," Professor Bryant said.

International experience, particularly in developing nations, showed people keeping as far away from the sea as practical. Yet Professor Bryant admitted living about 800 metres from the coast.

However he said waves from the Indonesian quake generally travelled only 600 metres inland, so he felt he would be safe from a tsunami.

Despite recent tsunami warnings, Professor Bryant said there was no evidence that their incidence was increasing.

"We're just more aware of them," he said.

Professor Ted Bryant from Wollongong University said the 10cm waves that hist Australia's north were consistent with an 8.1 quake magnitude.

He said part of the panic was caused by the timing of the warning, which was made public about 8.30am, when Australian authorities would haven been alerted about the earthquake soon after it occurred at 6.40am.
