BEIJING—A major earthquake struck a sparsely populated region of western China early Friday. Some houses collapsed, but there were no injuries, state media reported.

The 7.2-magnitude quake hit at 6:33 a.m. (2233 GMT Thursday), about 140 miles southeast of the city of Hotan in southwest Xinjiang province, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A spokesman for China's Earthquake Administration said it was a 7.3 magnitude quake. There were no reports of injuries, he said, and the area is sparsely populated.

There were four aftershocks in the region, ranging from 5.0 to 5.2 magnitude, according to a notice on the Web site of the administration.

The earthquakes occurred around the towns of Ahqan and Bostan, just north of the Kunlun mountains, with a total population of around 13,400 people, according to Chinese state media.

China's state-run television channel, CCTV, said that some houses had collapsed, but that no one was hurt.

Dale Grant, a USGS geophysicist, described the area as "very seismically active," but said Friday's temblor was the biggest there on record.

Xinjiang is a predominantly Muslim region with a culture that is distinctly different from that of China's ethnic Han majority.

China's Earthquake Administration said the last earthquake in the Hotan area struck in 1992, with a magnitude of 5.9.

In 2003, a 6.8-magnitude quake killed 268 people in Bachu county in the west of Xinjiang.

A moderate earthquake jolted an area of southwestern China close to the border with Myanmar on Friday night, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the magnitude-5 quake in Yunnan province, the report said.

Phones at the seismological bureau in Yunnan's Yingjiang County were busy.

China's deadliest earthquake in modern history struck the northeastern city of Tangshan on July 28, 1976, killing some 240,000 people.

Yeah, it's scary and unusuall that it was so far inland - they usually strike on the west or east coast.

Brian: It would seem like you're off by a day but I believe Eastern Zone US time is 12 hours earlier than the western area of China, so that makes 3/21 there exactly 3/20 here and off by a touch on the Richter scale -- but here's your Tibet earthquake, right on schedule!

China Hit By Strong 7.2 Magnitude Earthquake

Beijing, China (AHN) - A 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit a remote area of China, between Xinjiang and the Tibet regions early Friday and was followed by aftershocks ranging from 5.0 to 5.2 magnitude, United States and Chinese earthquake monitoring agencies said.

The villagers felt the tremor at 6:33 a.m. local time on Friday. Its epicenter was 140 miles southeast of Hotan City.

The quake rocked many buildings and forced the evacuation of families from one village. There were no immediate reports of casualties in the sparsely populated area, state media said.

A magnitude-5.3 aftershock followed 17 minutes later, a magnitude-5.5 aftershock 22 minutes after that and another at magnitude 5.2 about an hour later, it said.

In 2003, similar earthquake hit the region in 2003. The tremor had a 6.8 magnitude on the Richter scale and hit western Xinjiang killing at least 260 people and destroying about 10,000 homes.

I was trying to get you exact mileage from point of quake to tectonic plate edge but can't! I can tell you that this place where the earthquake occured, Xianching, appears to be right on or very very close to the Indian Plate, the plate India rides on. So the area the quake occured was in very close proximity to the Eurasian Plate and the Indian Plate - right on the border.

Eww, so if either of those plates are moving that area is in for some hell! Poor Tibet is only a short jog to the west of the area too, by the way - I'm not sure if Nepal is on the Eurasian side or on the Indian Plate. I'll try to find out, but either way, if there is plate activity in that area and those plates are moving against each other poor Tibet is bound to be headed for trouble.

Thousands Die In China Earthquake

The death toll of the earthquake in China has risen to nearly 10,000 in the country's worst hit region, with several thousand people reported to be buried in one factory alone.

The tremor, in the southwest of the country, has also buried 900 teenagers in a school and reports said that 50 students were confirmed dead.

"The situation is worse than we previously estimated and we need more people here to help," the Chinese premier Wen Jiabao said as he visited the disaster relief headquarters.

State media said some 80% of the buildings in one county of Sichuan have collapsed, including a hospital.

Also, hundreds of people were buried in two collapsed chemical plants, state media reported online.

Xinhua said about 6,000 people were evacuated and more than 80 tonnes of liquid ammonia had leaked.

Roads and phone lines have been cut off since the 7.8 magnitude quake struck at 2:30pm local time.

The quake's epicentre was in the nearby Sichuan county of Wenchuan and its force caused buildings to sway across China and as far away as the Thai capital Bangkok.

Shock waves from the quake were even detected by the British Geological Survey.

"At 0628 GMT today, the rocks either side of a major fault in south-west China suddenly and violently broke apart," spokesman Roger Musson said.

"The shock waves spread out in all directions, like waves in a pond. In a mere seven minutes, the fastest waves reached the UK.

"BGS seismologists analysed the data and prepared an alert to inform concerned parties - government and relief organisations."

Dutch ex-pat Marco Duits told Sky News that he was at work in China when the earthquake happened.

Rescuers search a collapsed school

"I was sitting in my office and suddenly everything began to shake," he said.

"The third-floor started to break-up. Everybody started to run out. We were outside and watched the whole building shaking.

"It did not collapse, but it shook and fell forwards."

The 900 students were buried in the rubble of a collapsed three-storey school building in the Sichuan city of Dujiangyan. A rescue operation is under way.

Sky News' environment correspondent Catherine Jacob said this earthquake by Chinese standards was considerable.

"This earthquake, as I understand, is quite rare in that particular area," she said.

A hospital patient is moved

"In China, there was a very large earthquake in March measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale. That is obviously also very big, but this, by reports anyway, is on much larger scale."

State media reported that five more school buildings had collapsed with students inside them.

More than 100 casualties occurred in the provinces of Sichuan, Gansu and Yunnan as well as Chongqing, a municipality of 30 million people that neighbours Sichuan.

Four more children died in a separate school collapse in Lirang township of Chongqing.

Another 10 died and 14 were seriously injured in the northwestern province of Gansu, Xinhua news agency's online edition said.

Buildings toppled in at least six counties near the epicentre, Xinhua said.

Premier Wen Jiabao had rushed to the area and President Hu Jintao ordered an "all-out" rescue effort, Xinhua reported.

Thousands of army troops and paramilitary People's Armed Police carrying medical supplies were also headed to the region, state television said.

Mr Wen described the quake as a "major disaster", and called for calm.
