Anthony Sowell (born August 19, 1959) is a convicted attempted rapist and suspected serial killer. He served 15 years in prison for an attempted 1989 rape and was arrested again in October 2009 as a suspect in the murder of eleven women whose bodies were found at his Cleveland, Ohio duplex.[1] Sowell has been charged with at least five counts of aggravated murder.[2]

Biography

At the age of 19, Sowell entered the U. S. Marine Corps in Cleveland, Ohio on January 24, 1978.[3] He had boot camp in South Carolina and basic training at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, where he also had his first duty station as an electrician.[3] He was then assigned to duty with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at Cherry Point, also in North Carolina.[3] In 1984 Sowell was ordered to Camp Butler in Okinawa, Japan.[3] He was discharged from Camp Pendleton, California on January 18, 1985.[3] During his seven-year Marine Corps career, he received a Good Conduct Medal with one star, a Meritorious Mast certificate, Sea Service Deployment ribbon, Certificate of Commendation and two Letters of Appreciation.[3]

In 1989 a woman, who was three months pregnant, went to Sowell’s home voluntarily, but when she tried to leave he bound her hands and feet with a tie and a belt and gagged her with a rag.[4] The victim told police: “He choked me real hard because my body started tingling. I thought I was going to die.”[4] Sowell was convicted of attempted rape and served 15 years in prison. He was released in 2005.

Sowell worked in a factory until 2007 when he began collecting unemployment benefits.[4] Neighbors said he earned a living selling scrap metal.[1] They complained to the health department of a foul smell in the neighborhood.[4] He was a member of an online dating service, where he stated that he was a "master" looking for a submissive person to "train".[5]

In December 2008,[3] Sowell invited a woman he knew to his home for a drink. On September 22, 2009 she reported to police that after a few drinks, he became angry, hit her, choked her and raped her as she passed out. On October 29, police arrived with a warrant to arrest him for the alleged rape. He was not at home, but they found two bodies on the floor in the living room.[4] He was arrested on Octover 31, 2009.[3] At the time of his arrest, Sowell was 50 years old. He had been living in his current home for four years.[4]

The bodies of four other women were found throughout the home, buried in a shallow grave in the basement and in crawl spaces in the house.[6] After digging in the backyard, investigators found three more bodies and the remains of a fourth. Police also found a human skull in a bucket inside the house, which brought the body count to eleven.

On November 5, 2009, one of the eleven victims was identified as Tonia Carmichael, a 53-year old African American woman who disappeared more than a year ago.[7] Her body was found buried in the back yard.[7] She appeared to have been strangled and was identified through the use of DNA evidence.[7] She had a criminal record of theft and drug charges; her mother reported her missing back in December.[7]

On November 5, 2009, a second victim was identified as Telacia Fortson, a 31-year old African American woman who disappeared five months ago.[8] Although she has been missing since June, her mother did not report her missing until she heard the news coverage regarding the dead bodies discovered in Sowell's home.[8]

Records of missing persons going back to Sowell's June 2005 release from prison are being searched and DNA testing is being conducted on the bodies fround at Sowell's house. Protesters holding posters of missing loved ones have gathered outside his home.[1]

Dillon owned hundreds of guns. At first, he used them to slaughter stray animals, but soon he moved on to killing the neighbors' pets.
Dillon also bullied his only son, beat his wife and visited dozens of prostitutes.
But when all of that couldn't create the thrill Dillon needed, he moved on to his ultimate control fantasy: hunting humans and deciding whether they should live or die.

Victim's mom, killer's friend helped nab Ohio sniper

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Some residents of Ohio know what it is like to live with the fear of being the next victim of an unknown sniper.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a killer who came to be known as the "Outdoorsman Sniper" terrorized the state. His victims were primarily men who hunted and fished in Ohio.

Thomas Lee Dillon shot and killed five men before he was caught.

People said he didn't look like a killer. Dillon played the role of a quiet loner and dedicated family man. He took vacations with his wife and son. But Dillon also lived in a fantasy world where he was the star.

"I don't know that I've ever encountered anyone with [such a] rich and elaborate fantasy world as Thomas Lee Dillon had. And, almost invariably, they were fantasies of unlimited influence, power, control," said forensic psychologist Jeffrey Smalldon.

Dillon owned hundreds of guns. At first, he used them to slaughter stray animals, but soon he moved on to killing the neighbors' pets.

Dillon also bullied his only son, beat his wife and visited dozens of prostitutes.

But when all of that couldn't create the thrill Dillon needed, he moved on to his ultimate control fantasy: hunting humans and deciding whether they should live or die.

One of his victims was 21-year-old steel mill worker Jamie Paxton.

After his murder, Jamie's heartbroken mother wrote letters to her local newspaper, publicly scolding the then-anonymous killer.

"In one of the letters, I told the person that they had Jamie's blood on their hands. And no matter how many times they washed their hands, Jamie's blood was still there," said Jean Paxton. "I asked them, 'How can you touch members of your family with hands that have killed?'"

After a year of reading her letters, Dillon wrote the paper back anonymously, claiming he was the killer and giving this explanation:

"Paxton was killed because of an irresistible compulsion that has taken over my life to turn into a merciless killer with no conscience. I thought no more of shooting Paxton than shooting a bottle at the dump," he wrote.

But he did try to connect with his victim's family.

"He did go to the site where Jamie -- where he killed Jamie one time and he kicked over some crosses and tore out a tree and he was angered by something he had read in the newspaper about the closeness of our family and the love that we still held even though he tried to destroy our family," Jean Paxton remembered.

Two years and three murders later, Dillon was caught. His letter to Jean Paxton had prompted an FBI profile that helped lead to his capture.

Former Akron Beacon Journal reporter Jolene Limbacher believes one of the killer's friends turned him in.

" I think that they finally nabbed him because one of Tom's oldest and best friends that he had known through high school -- his name is Richard Fry -- Tom and Richard Fry had shared a common interest in firearms and in hunting," she said.

Limbacher said Fry became alarmed after Dillon repeatedly asked him, "Do you think I could have killed somebody?"

"I think that Tom was just being boastful. Tom was a practical joker. You never knew when to take Tom seriously. I don't think he had any intention of being caught. I just think that was his banter and that's just what he did with his best friend," she said.

Even from behind bars, Dillon still wanted to exert control, this time over the reporter.

She received jailhouse calls, lengthy letters and meticulous cartoons from Dillon for five months and was able to get inside the mind of a serial sniper.

"He enjoyed reading the autopsy reports of the victims. He enjoyed knowing how much blood filled their chest cavity. He seemed to get a great deal of pleasure out of knowing that he shot the head off of one of them," the former reporter remembers. "They were his trophies."

"They love to control. They love the thrill of the hunt. They love the ecstasy they get from killing, and I'm sure that Tom is probably thrilled that he is being compared to the sniper. Tom never wanted to be a footnote," Limbacher said.

Why are all my missing person cases public?

The reason for making all my missing person cases public is simple...there is no possible way I can investigate these myself.  I add at least one new case a day, 7 days a week with no vacations...this leaves little free time to do individual case work.  Making everything public far outweighs working in secrecy...what you get is what I dreamt, nothing more or nothing less.  When I post my dream drawing on a case, I usually post a translation too...this translation includes everything I know about the case, nothing is kept from you the reader.  As with most people, I do not remember a majority of my dreams, and going back to specific dd's (dream drawings) does not usually bring back anything additional I have not already posted.  I am not a psychic and can only work via dreaming or lucid dreaming, so with each request, I literally have to 'sleep on it'.  I am not concerned about my dreams not being right, however I am concerned about letting those who can make a difference in solving a case, do so.  I have been doing this for several years now, and will continue to do it in a way I know works.  I have never charged to open a case, and have no plans on doing so in the future...all work, including work from those helping me is done 100% pro bono.  When corresponding about a specific case via email, please assume it will be made public...as always I will try my best to remove personal information of the sender...but mistakes do happen.
